X EDITION OF THE RED GLIAL ESPAÑOLA (RGE) BIENNAL MEETING | |
September, 4th: 8.30 – 13.30![]() |
Venue: CONGRESS AND EXHIBITION HALL OF GALICIA
Room Obradoiro RGE The Biannual Meeting of the Red Glial Española (RGE) is the main activity of the unique national network for glial cell researchers in Spain as a satellite activity to the Spanish Society for Neurosciences (SENC) Meeting. It is one of the best opportunities in Spain to promote collaboration between groups and researchers of diverse background and origins (Hospitals, Research Council, Universities), but also to serve as an exhibitor for a broader audience, including those not currently working with glia. It is nowadays, on the 100th anniversary of Del Rio Hortega’s discovery of microglia and oligodendrocytes, well established that glial cells are pivotal in CNS physiology and that they have a crucial role in neurodegeneration and regeneration in all CNS pathologies. In the RGE and, therefore, in this Xth Symposium of the RGE, there will be a wide range of techniques and approaches represented, including morphology, electrophysiology, animal models, cell and organotypic cultures, optogenetics, pharmacology, genetics, proteomics or flow cytometry. In addition, the topics presented by research groups usually cover major fields of Neuroscience, including development, synaptic function, neurodegeneration and repair, homeostasis and neuroendocrinology, from complementary perspectives: basic, applied and translational. Therefore, RGE meeting complements the SENC Congress and offer the possibility of additional scientific resources and new interactions to many of the potential SENC meeting attendants. |
XI MEETING OF THE RED NeurOEvoDevo PEDRO RAMÓN Y CAJAL |
|
Venue: CONGRESS AND EXHIBITION HALL OF GALICIA
Room 1 Nerea Moreno, Fernando García-Moreno, José Luis Ferrán The Red NeuroEvoDevo Pedro Ramón y Cajal is the continuation of the former Club Pedro Ramón y Cajal of Comparative Neurobiology, which exists since 1996. The Red meets periodically every two years, always associated to the biannual SENC meeting. This year we celebrate the XI Meeting on the first day of the SENC meeting, as usual, on 4th of September in Santiago de Compostela. The Red represents a forum for discussion of evolutionary and comparative neurobiology, focused in both the adult and the developing brain. People involved enjoy the possibility to get exposed to the scientific novelties of our field, in specific findings as well interpretive conceptions (models, hypotheses, theories, etc). In the next meeting, ten speakers will share their results and new proposals in an evolutionary context, widely from an anatomical or functional framework, neurochemical systems, cortical evolution, neuronal migrations, or emergent models in neuroscience. The speakers are a good representation from the entire Spanish community. The Red constitutes an interesting opportunity for researchers from distant laboratories to share their ongoing studies and to analyze them in a diverse context that will undoubtedly open new opportunities for discussion and collaboration. |

IMPROVISATION: A DIALOG BETWEEN NEUROSCIENCE AND MUSIC |
|
September, 4th: 20.00-21.00![]() |
Venue: CONGRESS AND EXHIBITION HALL OF GALICIA
Guglielmo Foffani, piano solo, free improvisationRoom 2 Musical improvisation is a complex form of creative human behavior that is attracting increasing interest of neuroscientists (Beaty, Neurosci Biobehav Rev 2015). From the perspective of its physical outcome, musical improvisation can be investigated as a generation of novel motor sequences (Berkowitz and Ansari, Neuroimage 2008, 2010) activating specific cortical regions (Bengtsson et al., J Cogn Neurosci 2007; Lu J et al., Front Neurosci 2017). From a more experience-oriented perspective, these studies point toward an internally-directed, disinhibited cognitive state (Boasen et al., Front Hum Neurosci 2018), which would define a sort of improvisational state of mind (Dolan et al., Front Psychol 2018). The proposed activity pretends to explore this improvisational state of mind in a dialog between the organizer (Guglielmo Foffani, neuroscientists and pianist) and the audience, using formal language and music. |

BLINK AND YOU’LL MISS IT: THE BRAIN AND THE FILM EDITING |
|
September, 5th: 20.00 - 21.00![]() ![]() |
Venue: CONGRESS AND EXHIBITION HALL OF GALICIA
Room Obradoiro Walter Murch (Movie editor and sound designer) The Neurocinematics is an innovative area of research that approaches the study of cinema from a neuroscientific point of view. This session will be about how the brain and film montage are related. One way to do this is through the analysis of the audience’s flickers and their correlated brain activities. Cuts in audiovisuals increase attention by decreasing the frequency of blinking of those who watch them. Interesting functional relationships between blinks and cuts will be presented in the session. The chaotic, disorganized and fast-assembly style used in some audiovisuals increases attention while decreasing conscious processing. The opposite happens in an organized and classic assembly style. The session will be attended by Hollywood editor Mr. Walter Murch, winner of three Oscar Awards and nine nominations, and responsible for the edition and/or sound design of films such as Apocalypse Now, The English Patient, The Godfather or The Conversation, among others. |

Room Santiago Women in Neuroscience (WiNS) Committee There is a trend to think that the gap between the number of men and women in science is closing. However, today the discrimination suffered by women scientists is even more subtle and difficult to perceive. While the number of women with university degrees amply exceeds the number of men in some areas, positions of higher responsibility and prestige in science are still largely occupied by men.
